Tip 1: Send the Children Somewhere
Have you experienced going from room to room carrying boxes or looking for misplaced items with kids running all around the place? Trust me, it’s frustrating and stressful. There’s also the worry that they may get hurt, so get them out of the way by hiring someone to babysit for the day.
Tip 2: Take Apart the Big Furniture
Time is money. You will say goodbye to both when you pay the movers by the hour and they spend a lot of the time dismantling furniture.
Get a screwdriver and a drill, and enlist the help of friends or relatives to dismantle and stack bed frames, dining tables and big pieces of furniture before moving day.
Tip 3: Pull the plug on your refrigerator and freezer and take out the contents, including the ice trays, at least two hours before the moving company arrives.
If your new home is located quite a distance from your old one and you are worried about food spoilage, consider getting a refrigerated car cooler. This nifty invention, which costs around $100, is plugged into your car and works like a fridge to keep food items fresh.
Tip 4: Close All Doors with Tape
Use electric or masking tape to avoid potential moving disasters caused by swinging furniture doors. Tape down all doors and drawers, including the fridge and freezer, and feel at peace knowing that you’ve taken care of any potential accident from occurring.
Tip 5: Pack like an Expert
Leaving the packing at the last minute is a common mistake when moving. The proper time to start packing is a week before moving day. To get the job done quickly and easily, make sure to have the essential packing items including the right size boxes, bubble wrap, newspapers, markers and tape.
Be careful when individually wrapping and packaging fragile items and label those boxes on all sides properly. And sorting at your new home will be easier if you label the boxes by both item and room. If boxes are marked with their appropriate room, the movers will know to take them straight to the correct room in the house and save you the trouble of carrying boxes from room to room later on.
These simple tips will make moving day easier and quicker – saving the stress and giving you more time to enjoy and relax.
