The Fernleigh Track project was a joint venture between Newcastle City Council and City of Lake Macquarie and the first section between Adamstown and Burwood Road opened in 2003. Continued work saw the construction of other sections until the final section between Jewels and Belmont was completed in March 2011.
The gradients are gentle and ideal for walkers, runners, cyclists and families of all ages. Features along the way include the historic tunnel under City Road, Redhead beach, Jewels wetlands and coffee stop opportunities at Belmont, Whitebridge and Adamstown.
At the site of the former Kahibah station, the Fernleigh Track is crossed by the Great North Walk, a 250 km (155 mi) walking trail connecting Newcastle and Sydney. The track also passes through the centre of the Glenrock Lagoon catchment. These photos are just a very small portion of the Fernleigh Track at the Adamstown end where the tunnel is.
